A new analysis from IFMA reveals that professional credentials can significantly increase both earning potential and career advancement opportunities for facility managers.

According to IFMA’s Evaluating the Value report, professionals who earn an IFMA credential — such as the Certified Facility Manager® (CFM®), Facility Management Professional® (FMP®), or Sustainability Facility Professional® (SFP®) — can experience measurable results soon after.

Key findings from the report include:

• $5,400 average salary increase within the first year of earning a credential.
• Average FM salary: approximately $102,000.
• 52% of credential holders report a direct raise, with many also earning promotions or expanded responsibilities.
• 16:1 five-year return on investment (ROI) when factoring credentialing costs and salary growth.
• 40% of credentialed professionals achieved both a promotion and salary increase within the first year.
• 78% of supervisors say credentialed employees receive higher performance ratings.

Beyond financial rewards, credential holders report greater confidence, credibility, and recognition — both within their organizations and across the FM industry. Employers also benefit from improved team performance and verified expertise.
